G9: The Kite Runner, an Introduction

Dear Parents,

I am excited to share with you that Grade 9 is now starting their first unit of the year on The Kite Runner, a novel by Khaled Hosseini.  I taught this book for the first time two years ago and it has quickly become a favorite of students!

Through the book we encounter many themes such as friendship, prejudice, immigration, growing up, dealing with trauma, and father/son relationships.  One of my favorite aspects is the fact that most of it is set in Afghanistan; through the book we are able to experience Afghanistan.  Since we can’t really visit Afghanistan ourselves, this book is a beautiful window into the culture and teaches us how to empathize with a people we only read about in the news.  It is inspiring on many levels and I can’t wait to dive into it with the class!

Additionally, the students will be doing an introductory webquest as a way to learn some background about Afghanistan.  Here you can read along with us and learn about Afghanistan: BBC Website on Afghanistan.

Sincerely,

Getting Ready

Hi Everyone,

New Student Orientation is in just one week– can you believe it?!  I’m getting excited as I prepare for the school year; I’m working to make a lot of improvements.  Some of the changes you’ll notice are in the curriculum, the assessment policy, the way we study grammar, and we might even be getting new desks.  That may not sound like much to you, but we should have an even smoother and more fun year of learning; plus, we’re working to better prepare you for the IB, so that you can also enjoy your years in the upper school.

Enjoy these funny English comics as you enjoy your last days of summer.

See you soon!

Ms. Barlow
